THE NUTS AND BOLTS

Money

Peru's currency is the nuevo sol. Although exchange rates vary, prices in Peru are typically about a third of what they are in the United States and slightly less than that for Europeans. The easiest way to get cash in Peru is through ATMs, which are available throughout the country. All ATMs accept Visa and Mastercard, and a handful accept American Express and Diner's Card. High-end hotels and restaurants also accept credit card payment. In such establishments, Visa is always accepted, and increasingly so are Mastercard, American Express, and Diner's Club. It is wise to contact your US bank before traveling to learn if it charges any additional foreign usage fees.
