THE NUTS AND BOLTS

Safety

The disparity of wealth in Peru is often unsettling for travelers. Lima has both shantytowns and BMW drivers. Such inequality is often construed as fodder for robbers, pickpockets, and other dangers. While petty thefts do happen in Peru, their occurrence is not much higher than that of other South American countries. As a foreigner, unfamiliar with Peru's customs and people, you should always be conscious of your surroundings. Do not wander down seemingly dangerous streets. We recommend that you always take official taxis, which can be reserved through your hotel. When out on the town, leave your passport, entrance documents, and return airline tickets in your hotel's safe deposit box and sightsee only with the photocopies.
